Preparation for the staging of the Caribbean’s largest conference in Antigua and Barbuda is moving ahead with expects visiting the island recently to provide technical support where arrangements are concerned

The Under Secretary of the Department of Economic and Social Affairs of the United Nations visited the island last week ahead of the staging of the 4th SIDS conference to be held in 2024 in Antigua and Barbuda.

The major conference will bring world leaders together to agree on a bold new program of action for SIDS.

This new ten-year plan will focus on practical and impactful solutions to keep SIDS afloat and give their citizens a sustainable and safe future.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne said the conference is expected to bring over 5000 delegates to the island

“Antigua and Barbuda has landed what will be the single largest conference in the history of Antigua and Barbuda, in the history of the OECS, and probably the Caribbean region. We [Antigua] will be accommodating up to 5000 delegates at this conference,” Browne said

Browne said the conference will also test the country’s capacity to host large conferences

“But when you look at the impact of bringing 5000 delegates here for about four days, the economic activity will be enormous in terms of the spending of these delegates. I’m hoping that we may have to even encourage a few people get into to Airbnb”, he said

The conference which was first held in Barbados will discuss the Sustainable Development Goals and set a pathway to assist SIDs to achieve specific goals including a new ten-year plan.

The plan will focus on practical and impactful solutions to keep SIDS afloat and give their citizens a sustainable and safe future.

The conference will also seek to deliver specific initiatives and concrete deliverables to address SIDS-specific challenges including the climate crisis, biodiversity, and spiraling debt.

During his last trip to the UN in New York, Browne held meetings with major diplomatic partners and top officials in the United Nations where a wide range of important matters, including the SIDS conference was discussed
