Dominican educator and sportsman Yehudi John is the University of the West Indies Open Campus Valedictorian for 2022.
John, is a Senior Sports Development Officer in the Ministry of Sports, Culture & Community Development in Dominica. He has excelled in the Bachelor of Science (BSc) in Management Studies and completed with First Class Honours.
In his capacity as Sports Development Officer, Yehudi supervises staff at the Sports Division for the execution of Physical Education & Sports in primary schools, as well as supporting sporting activities at schools and at the community level. Previously he served as a Physics and Mathematics teacher at the upper secondary (high) level.
As a sports enthusiast, Yehudi believes that when one finds employment in a field one enjoys, one never has to work a day in one’s life, hence one’s career path.
His dedication to community service is evident in his commitment to sports on the Island of Dominica. Though he previously served as President and Vice President of the Dominica Amateur Basketball Association (DABA), his services to sport extend to Track & Field, Table Tennis, Cricket, Volleyball, Football and Cycling.
Yehudi finds time to balance work, community, and family life as a father of three and a husband. He believes the best parenting methods are being an example and a role model. Academic excellence has always been one of his guiding principles, and he demands the same from his children and those under his tutelage.
Having completed his bachelor’s degree, Yehudi states that his academic goals include pursuing a Master’s in Sports Management which will assist in effectively executing his duties and responsibilities on the job, and a Master’s in Disaster Risk Management which will aid him in service to his country.
The UWI Open Campus is proud that Yehudi chose the Campus to pursue his education and congratulates him on this significant academic achievement while wishing him success in his future academic pursuits. As is customary, Yehudi will deliver the Valedictory Speech at the Graduation Ceremony on behalf of his fellow graduates from across the Region. His speech will be centred on the theme of gratitude.
