PM Browne says the election results was God’s will

Prime Minister Gaston Browne has told a church service that he has accepted the will of God, where the election results are concerned.

Browne’s Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party was re-elected into office but by a considerably lower margin during the January 18 general elections.

On Sunday, members of the ABLP and well-wishers assembled for a thanksgiving church service at the St Johns People’s Pentecostal Church House of Restoration.

“I was asked if I am bitter about the reduced mandate and I said to them that it is God’s will and therefore I have no other choice but to accept God’s will. And evidently, there are lessons to be learned and one can be assured that we will certainly learn from our mistakes and we will use the opportunity to strengthen our organization,” Browne said.

Browne said not only was the victory “historic” but it was God’s “divine intervention”, which could not have been achieved without the sacrifices of the “prayer warriors who would have interceded on our behalf and it would have resulted not only in the defense”.

He said the ABLP had to contend with an avalanche of lies, deception, and outlandish promises, but “with the protection of God, we prevailed”.

The newly re-elected prime minister said he also holds no malice, not even against those whom he said sought to defame and assassinate his character [during the election campaign]

“And this morning, as a true Christian, I say to all the people of Antigua and Barbuda that we hold no malice, not even those who sought to defame and assassinate our character. I will remain the prime minister for all, all citizens, and all residents in this country.

And as I said before, the result of the last journey elections is a blessing in disguise. It is God’s will, and it will provide our institution with the opportunity to renew and realign,” Browne said.

He said the ABLP will, in time, seek to attract new talent and look keenly within the public and private sectors, as well as the broader civil society, and certainly, we will also look within the church.

“Now, as in all battles, there were some casualties, and we express our sympathy to those who lost their seats and reassure them that we continue to stand with them. But we should be grateful that your leader is still standing. And not only he is still standing, but he’s standing strong and healthy, ready for the battle to take this country to a new level of progress and prosperity,” he added.

The prime minister recommitted himself to nation-building, saying that he will remain an inclusive prime minister who will continue to preside over an organization that will be like a church “that will ensure that everyone who deserves and desires to play a part in nation-building will have the opportunity to do so,”

Adding, “I say to you that there will be no bitterness and that we shall move forward in great optimism because we believe that the future of this country is bright.

“Our focus shall be exclusively on nation-building. And whereas there will be detractors and those who will plot to undermine and and destroy, we shall remain undaunted in our focus to take this country to a new level of progress and prosperity”
