The US is considering laws to regulate ChatGPT and other AI products

Following the launch and unimaginable growth of ChatGPT, the United States is already considering regulating the software and the entire artificial intelligence (AI) systems operating in the country. The Biden administration is conducting a study on the impact of the product on national security and education.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), which advises the president on information policy and telecommunications, wants the White House to be a part of these innovations amid regulatory calls.

Alan Davidson, NTIA’s Administrator, said: “Responsible AI systems could bring enormous benefits, but only if we address their potential consequences and harms. For these systems to reach their full potential, companies and consumers need to be able to trust them.”

OpenAi, an AI and research company, launched ChatGPT ON November 30, 2022. It is a natural language processor that allows you to have a human-like conversation with the chatbot. It can provide answers to almost every question, and assist in writing essays, emails, and codes.

Among the several worries about this new technology is the fear that it could adversely affect the labour market in the United States and Europe by about 25% to 50%. A few months after its launch, it is already the fastest-growing consumer software with over 100 million users worldwide.

The agency said it would provide a report on how the government could ensure the safety of modern AI and curb AI-related risks while focusing on the opportunities presented by the technology.

During a meeting of the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology last week, Joe Biden said AI could be dangerous to Americans and the rest of the world. He said the government must ensure the safety of AI products before they are allowed into the market.

“Tech companies have a responsibility, in my view, to make sure their products are safe before making them public,” President Biden said.

NTIA’s investigation would examine the legality, effectiveness, safety and trustworthiness of the ChatGPT and other similar products that are yet to hit the market.
