The Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union has staged what has been described as a successful the International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) Tourism Services Conference at the Verandah Resort & Spa.

The Conference which brought together dozens of Unions involved in the global tourism industry was aimed at strengthening the labour movement in tourism

David Massiah, the ITF Tourism Services Section Chair and General Secretary of the local affiliated Union, the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union spoke to the importance of tourism.

He said the wealth that tourism brings in must be shared with the workers who create it.

ITF General Secretary, Stephen Cotton, also addressed the gathering, saying that “people, power and planet is the underpinning strategy to build a strong labour movement in tourism”

Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Labour, Joan Carrot, also attended Monday’s event.

“Trade Unions have a unique capacity to shape and mould the tourism industry by working in tandem with governments. They are the voice of the many who work to make the tourism industry what it is,” she said
