Nurses who participated in a “decision day” meeting last week Thursday and Friday could be suspended.
That’s according to sources close to the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center who told our newsroom that these nurses could to be sent home without pay, as punishment for leaving work to attend the urgent meeting called by ABNA.
Last week dozens of nurses met at the Antigua and Barbuda Nurses Association’s headquarters to discuss possible industrial action.
The Association had threatened to take industrial action in separate letters to Health Minister Molwyn Joseph and Chief Establishment Officer, if their concerns were not met by a specific time.
The President of ABNA Soria-Dupie Winston and the other members of the executive then organized an “urgent” meeting where a decision on industrial action was expected to be taken.
One senior nurse confirmed that the threats were indeed made to those who attended the meeting.
Meanwhile, ABNA has decided to hold off on strike action until talks with the establishment division and the Ministry of Health concluded.
The executive and the authorities were in discussions up until late Monday afternoon, to avert industrial action.
Poor working conditions, remunerations, uniforms allowances and other payments, and the availability of basic medical equipment and supplies are just a few of the issues nurses have been lamenting over.
Discussions are expected to continue on Today.
They are willing to suspend nurses for meeting when the country has a nurses shortage. So much for caring for the people.
If all the non-national nurses decided to go back home especially the Guyanese, Antigua and Barbuda health systems doomed. I heard Guyana is now doing better since the struck oil. Ministry of Health needs to be careful with threats of suspending nurses.
