St Kitts and Nevis wants to become a republic

St Kitts and Nevis look set to becoming a republic as reports surfaced that Prime Minister Dr. Terrance Drew plans to hold public consultations towards dropping the British Monarch as the head of state in St Kitts and Nevis.

Drew told the BBC that discussions will start during his leadership, although he did give a date when the consultation will start.

He said his country is not totally free and never will be as long as King Charles remains as the head of state.

St Kitts and Nevis became an independent state nearly 40 years ago

Two other countries, namely Belize and Jamaica also expressed their intention to drop the British Monarch as head of state. They have already established commissions to guide the governments toward becoming republics.

King Charles, who was then the Prince of Wales, was on hand to witness the historic moment.

Drew also told the BBC that apart from becoming a republic, St Kitts and Nevis would like King Charles III to apologize for the monarchy’s historic role in the trans-Atlantic slave trade.

“I think that acknowledging that…something wrong was done, acknowledging it and apologizing for it, is a step in the right direction,” he said.
