The University of the West Indies Five Islands Campus has begun the process of reaching out to prospective students informing them of acceptance for the upcoming academic year.

For those who may be new to the process Shavar Maloney Marketing Officer, explained that the first step after acceptance is the orientation process which gives the new students, especially young ones, a taste of what to expect with college life.

“We know that it is a transition into a different time, university is not like High School, It’s not like Antigua State College. There is a lot more freedom, a different culture even life as a university student is different,” Maloney said.

The orientation activities will be during the week of August 21st and will address different things such as Financing, Mental Health, and having fun.

He said special giveaways will also be available for the students.

“We are going to make sure that they have a wonderful time and that will culminate with a fresher fete which is our first fete for the academic year, it is for them to enjoy themselves and destress in preparation for the school year,” Maloney said.

Meanwhile, the marketing officer also announced that a new principal will be in place by September.

Former Professor Densil Williams has moved on and will take up his new post as the new principal of the Mona campus on August 1. He is replacing marine biologist Professor Dale Webber

“In terms of naming a successor for the role of principal, the Vice Chancellor will be doing that shortly after they have met in council to review the recommendations and in the coming days an announcement will be made on who the new principal is and that person will be in place for the start of the new academic year August 1”.

The UWIFIC is also playing an integral role through the sponsorship of the Teenage Pageant.

Maloney said the feedback has been great so far.
