An individual from Jamaica named Antony Linton Stewart has pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit mail and wire fraud related to a fraudulent lottery scheme.
The scheme targeted elderly individuals in the United States and involved false claims of winnings, which required fees and taxes to be paid.
Victims were repeatedly contacted by Stewart and asked to send money via wire transfers or the US Postal Service. However, the victims never received any winnings as no lottery existed.
The scheme defrauded victims of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Branch is committed to investigating fraudulent schemes that target elderly Americans, regardless of where they originate.
The US Postal Inspection Service is also committed to investigating those who use the US Mail to commit fraud and target vulnerable citizens.
The guilty plea highlights the efforts of law enforcement to bring these criminals to justice and prevent them from stealing from seniors.
