Keisha Schahaff and Anastacia Mayers, the pioneering women who etched their names in history as the first Antiguans, the first Caribbean residents, and the inaugural mother-daughter team to voyage into space, have safely returned home after their groundbreaking expedition.
The homecoming occurred at the V.C Bird International Airport, where a warm reception awaited the intrepid space travelers.
Information Minister Melford Nicholas and other dignitaries extended a hearty welcome to the two remarkable women.
Expressing the nation’s pride and gratitude, Minister Nicholas conveyed the sentiments of the government of Antigua and Barbuda: “On behalf of the Prime Minister and all of Antigua and Barbuda, we extend a heartfelt welcome to Keisha and Anastacia back to their home base.”
The Minister noted that the achievement fills the nation with immense pride.
Keisha Schahaff and Anastacia Mayers earned their coveted spots in the 2021 competition that paved the way for this historic space journey. Their launch on August 10 at Virgin Galactic’s Spaceport America in New Mexico featured a breathtaking sight as the “mothership” carrier gracefully lifted off with the spaceplane securely attached.
To commemorate this monumental event, the Antigua and Barbuda Tourism Authority orchestrated public watch parties in both Antigua and Barbuda, allowing citizens nationwide to partake in the jubilation.
The Ministry officials see this extraordinary achievement as an opportunity to boost the nation’s visibility and promote Antigua and Barbuda as a premier vacation destination. Tourism Authority CEO Colin C. James confirmed their intention to involve Schahaff and Mayers in formulating forthcoming initiatives.
Minister Nicholas lauded the impact of this achievement on the nation, remarking, “This past week, the government of Antigua and Barbuda has taken immense pride in the accomplishments of these remarkable women.”
He highlighted this milestone’s profound benefit by associating the nation’s name with this groundbreaking achievement.
The Ministry of Tourism is scheduled to hold a press conference on Tuesday morning to officially extend its welcome to these exceptional women who have propelled Antigua and Barbuda onto the global stage of space exploration.
