Many successful performers from the recent Carnival celebrations will visit New York City this weekend to participate in Antigua and Barbuda Day festivities.
A flyer promoting the main event, a star-studded show, lists several artists scheduled to perform at the Gil-Scott Heron Amphitheatre in the Bronx, New York. Among the artists are Claudette Peters, the reigning Party Monarch (Groovy) winner, Ricardo Drue, and Empress. All three tied for the Road March Champion title this year.
Additionally, the 2023 Panorama Champions, Hell’s Gate Steel Orchestra, will also perform. The Antigua and Barbuda Festival Office is facilitating the artists’ participation. Other performers include Supa Mario, Vicious, and Laurena Davis. The program will be hosted by radio/television personalities Ibis, Lawrence M, and Lerter Kool.
Three Antiguan nationals, Dr. Oswald Thomas, Pamchetta Francis, and Tiria Mason, are organizing the event. According to Mason, the event is free for patrons and the artists’ performances are also free. “We provide an opportunity for these artists to perform, and anyone wishing to perform is invited to do so,” she explained.
This weekend is an occasion for celebrating the culture of various countries in the Caribbean diaspora living in the Tristate area, as Labor Day will be celebrated on Monday, September 4th in the United States.
