A Consultant Physiatrist and Internal Medicine Specialist at the hospital has presented a sobering perspective on the matter of suicide in the country.
She has revealed that among the patients she attends to, a disturbing trend emerges: nearly half of every 10 patients she sees have expressed thoughts of ending their own lives.
Furthermore, she emphasized that out of these five individuals, at least two have made actual suicide attempts.
“It is not just something we are exempt from, or just something in the United States. It is something that is increasing in this country I am seeing an increase in the number of people who say they are having thoughts of suicide or thoughts about dying and so this is why awareness becomes so important before we have an increase in the loss of lives from something which is almost 100 preventable,” Dr Chenelle Joseph said.
She clarified that a significant portion of these incidents occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dr. Joseph, when discussing statistics from the United States regarding suicide rates and methods, highlighted that the most prevalent method was the use of firearms.
Additionally, she pointed out that when it comes to discussing suicide, it’s observed that women are more likely to openly discuss the topic.”
