‘King Short Shirt’, Awarded Doctor of Letters by UWI

Sir Leroy McLean, also known as ‘King Short Shirt’ Emmanuel, has been awarded an honorary degree of Doctor of Letters from the University of the West Indies, Five Islands.

The award was presented to Sir McLean during the University’s commencement ceremony on Saturday. He accepted the degree wearing his red graduation gown, blue stole, and black cap.

During his acceptance speech, Sir McLean expressed his gratitude for being chosen and blessed to have carried the mantle of Antigua and Barbuda’s culture for over 60 years.

He also thanked his family, collaborators, and fans, as well as Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Ambassador Lionel ‘Max’ Hurst, and Ms. Patricia Tully, among others.

The University of the West Indies, Five Islands has announced that 14 recipients from the entertainment industry across the four landed campuses will receive the honorary degree to commemorate their outstanding contributions to their communities and society.
