The Prices and Consumer Affairs Division is cautioning consumers against using certain infant formulas produced by Reckitt/Mead Johnson Nutrition (MJN) due to a possible contamination with Cronobacter sakazakii in product batches sampled outside the U.S.
The producer has voluntarily recalled selected batches of infant formula powder, and advised parents to discard any affected formula.
Consumers should avoid using Nutramigen Powder in 12.6 and 19.8 oz cans if their UPC code is 300871239418 or 300871239456 and the “Use By Date” is “1 Jan 2025” and the recalled product batch number is ZL3FRW, ZL3FPE, ZL3FXJ, ZL3FQD, ZL3FMH, or ZL3FHG.
Nutramigen in 12.6 and 19.8 oz containers was manufactured in June 2023 and distributed mainly in June, July, and August 2023.
No other U.S. distributed Nutramigen batches or other Reckitt products are affected. In a press release, the manufacturer warned that Cronobacter bacteria can cause severe, life-threatening infections such as sepsis and meningitis.
Poor feeding, irritability, temperature changes, jaundice, grunting breaths, and abnormal movements are some of the symptoms of sepsis and meningitis. Cronobacter infection can also cause bowel damage and spread through the blood to other parts of the body. Consumers should check the bottom of the can to see if the batch number is affected.
If they have any questions or concerns about using these infant formulas, they should contact their physician. For refunds, consumers should contact the place of purchase.
