China’s President Vows to Always Support Antigua and Barbuda

Chinese President Xi Jinping meets with Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda Gaston Browne at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing, capital of China

Xi Jinping, the President of China, has praised Antigua and Barbuda for being among the first countries in the Eastern Caribbean to establish diplomatic ties with the People’s Republic of China.

The two countries have always respected and supported each other since establishing diplomatic ties 41 years ago, setting an example of equality and win-win cooperation between countries of different sizes.

The President made these remarks during his meeting with Prime Minister Gaston Browne in Beijing on Wednesday.

Xi Jinping noted that bilateral relations have maintained healthy and stable development, pragmatic cooperation has yielded fruitful results, and people’s friendship has deepened.

Under new circumstances, China is willing to enhance exchanges at all levels with Antigua and Barbuda and exchange experience on governance.

The President also expressed his willingness to strengthen synergies of development strategies, deepen practical cooperation, and push China-Antigua and Barbuda relations to achieve more results and better benefit the two peoples.

Xi emphasized the importance of continuing traditional friendship, consolidating political mutual trust, and understanding and supporting each other on issues concerning each other’s core interests and major concerns.

He highly appreciated Antigua and Barbuda’s firm adherence to the one-China principle.

The President also noted that China will, as always, support Antigua and Barbuda in safeguarding national sovereignty and independence as well as independently choosing a development path in line with its national conditions.

Xi mentioned that Antigua and Barbuda was the first country in the Eastern Caribbean to sign a Belt and Road cooperation Memorandum of Understanding with China.

The cooperation between the two sides has resulted in positive outcomes for both nations.

Xi stated that China is currently advancing Chinese modernization on all fronts, with high-quality development that will bring new opportunities for the development of Antigua and Barbuda, as well as bilateral cooperation.

Xi expressed China’s willingness to expand cooperation with Antigua and Barbuda, especially in areas such as trade, infrastructure construction, climate change, new energy, medical and health care, under the framework of the eight major steps to support high-quality Belt and Road cooperation.

He also emphasized the need to strengthen cultural and people-to-people exchanges, welcoming more young people from Antigua and Barbuda to come and study in China.

Xi further emphasized China’s willingness to strengthen multilateral coordination with Antigua and Barbuda to advocate an equal and orderly multipolar world, a universally beneficial and inclusive economic globalization, and promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

China is also ready to support Antigua and Barbuda in hosting the fourth International Conference on Small Island Developing States and to provide assistance to the economic and social development of regional countries within its capacity. Xi believes that this will promote the continuous development of relations between China and Caribbean countries.

Browne expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for its valuable support, stating that China’s assistance and cooperation have greatly contributed to the development of Antigua and Barbuda and helped with its poverty alleviation efforts. He also highlighted China’s global initiatives, such as the Belt and Road Initiative, the Global Development Initiative, the Global Security Initiative, and the Global Civilization Initiative, as concrete actions that promote common development and prosperity of the world and benefit the people.

Browne acknowledged that Antigua and Barbuda-China relations are based on profound friendship, mutual trust, mutual respect, and mutually beneficial cooperation.

He expressed his firm belief that Taiwan was, is, and will always be a province of China, and that Antigua and Barbuda will continue to abide by the one-China principle and support China in safeguarding national sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Browne further emphasized Antigua and Barbuda’s willingness to be China’s most reliable partner and stand firmly with China on issues concerning the well-being of all mankind, safeguarding the common interests of developing countries. He hoped that through the visit to China, bilateral relations will be brought to a new level, achieving more cooperation outcomes to bring more benefits to both nations.

Browne also pledged to actively promote the development of the relationship between the Caribbean Community and China.
