Development Commissioner Daven Joseph is hopeful that government officials and representatives of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union (ABWU) could return to the negotiation table to settle the matter of severance for former workers of the now-defunct LIAT 1974 Limited.

In the past, the government indicated its willingness to cover 50 percent of the severance owed to the hundreds of workers, which the union rejected, arguing for 100 percent severance instead and engaging in dialogue.

Both sides disagreed, leaving the matter still unresolved. The conversation has now reignited since the company has officially closed its operations.

Ambassador Daven Joseph expressed concern that the union has given its members false hope regarding the compensation package.

He stated, “It is very irresponsible of the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union to be given false hope to its members that they could receive more than what the government is offering. We will continue to discuss this matter with the former shareholders of LIAT 1974 Limited to recognize the rights of the workers.”

He also noted that now that the company is in receivership, it will be left up to the goodwill of the shareholders to decide.

Ambassador Joseph maintains his hope that the union will examine the situation and change its mode of operation to yield some success in this regard.

“Become realistic, sit at the table with the government of Antigua and Barbuda. I hope it is not too late for them to do so,” Joseph concluded.
