The Antigua and Barbuda Electoral Commission (ABEC) has received the green light, to sometime this year, proceed with the registration of all voters in the recognition.

The process has become necessary as the present voter’s Identification card nears its 10-year-old expiration date.

Prime Minister’s Chief of Staff Lionel Max Hurst said all eligible voters will have to take part in the process which has not been undertaken in decades. He also outlined that will the government has not yet set a date; it will be completed this year.

“Absolutely before the end of this year. Nevertheless, we are going to go to Parliament to ensure that this process has parliamentary approval. Re-registration is superior to the near renewal of the cards,” Hurst said.

Cabinet decided after meeting with top ABEC officials on Wednesday. The decision was to either remove the cards or move towards re-registration.
