Montserrat’s cultural icon and first calypso king, Justin “Hero” Cassell
Montserrat’s cultural icon and first calypso king, Justin “Hero” Cassell, has died at the age of 80.
Hero’s soulful tunes graced stages since the 1950s, leaving an indelible mark on the island’s musical history, and his contributions will always be remembered.
As a true pioneer of calypso in Montserrat, Hero’s legacy is deeply intertwined with the heartbeat of the island’s culture. He won an unmatched record of ten local calypso crowns and was the acclaimed songwriter for his late brother, Alphonsus “Arrow” Cassell.
The Caribbean has lost a prolific artist whose contributions have helped shape the region’s history and culture.
During this difficult time, our thoughts and prayers are with his family and the entire Montserratian community.
