Attorney Arthur Thomas to be Sworn in as New ABEC Chairman

Attorney Arthur Thomas will be sworn in as Chairman of ABEC tomorrow at 9:00 am at the Government House.

He replaces John Jarvis who passed away while in office.

PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE:

One of the founding partners of Thomas John & Weste, he has had a successful career, beginning as a sole practitioner at Thomas & Co. from April 1996 to December 1996, followed by working as an associate at Simon and Associates, St. John’s Antigua, from 1991 to 1996, specializing in civil litigation, corporate consultancy, land law, intellectual property, banking and securities law, insurance and industrial law, and probate.

In addition to practicing law, he is also the managing director of Corporate and Trust Services (Caribbean) Ltd., which provides professional services concerning offshore company formation, administration and management, provision of trust services, ship registration, residency, immigration consultancy, and bank introduction.

Furthermore, he has an extensive list of professional achievements.

From 1992 to 1993, he served as President of the Optimist Club of St. John’s – Antigua, and from 1994 to 2000, they were a Board Member of the Medical Benefits Board of Control.

He was also the Lieutenant Governor of Optimist International Jamaica District from 1995 to 1996.

From 1995 to 2002, the incoming ABEC chairman served as President, Director, and Shareholder of Industry and Commerce Insurance Company, where they were responsible for the entire operation of the company.

He was also a Member of the Public Service Commission from 1996 to 2004.

Additionally, Thomas is a Notary Public of Antigua and Barbuda since 1997, a Justice of the Peace since 2000, and served as Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Constituencies Boundaries Commission from 1998 to 1999.

he  also a Commissioner and Deputy Chairman of the Eastern Caribbean Securities Regulatory Commission from 2007 to 2020 and served as its Chairman from 2020 to 2022.

Furthermore, he has held various positions in different organizations, including being a Member and Club Director of the Rotary Club of Antigua from 1999 to 2020 (with a term as President in 2008/9), Registrar of the Anglican Diocese of The North Eastern Caribbean & Aruba from 1999 to 2011, Chairman of the Prison Visiting Committee from 2000 to 2004, and Honorary Consul to the Czech Republic from 2009 to 2014.

Finally, Thomas is also a member of the International Association of Gaming Attorneys since 2009, Chancellor of the Anglican Diocese of The North Eastern Caribbean & Aruba since 2011, Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Health and Fitness Club Inc. t/a Antigua Athletic Club from 2011 to 2020, Chairman of the Antigua National Parks Authority since 2015, Deputy Chairman of the Caribbean Union Bank since 2016, and Director of Jolly Beach Resort since 2017.
