The main opposition, the United Progressive Party (UPP), remains steadfast in their objection to the recently appointed Chairman of the Antigua and Barbuda Electoral (ABEC), Arthur Thomas.

The party issued a release last weekend questioning Thomas’ integrity due to his company’s involvement with former FTX Boss Sam Bankman-Fried and his resignation from two high-profile roles.

On Monday, Opposition Spokesperson for Legal Affairs Leon Chaku Symister went as far as to suggest that the move was illegal, and the opposition was not notified.

“We looked at the Representation of the Peoples Amendment Act which sets out the rule that governs the establishment of the commission and how Commissioners should be appointed.

“It also calls for consultations to be held with the Leader of the Opposition which was not done,” Symister said.

Symister emphasized that the citizens of the country should be worried about the apparent disregard for the law

He asserted that it is reasonable to deduce that such an appointment is invalid and without effect since it was not carried out under legal procedures.

The noted attorney said the law specifies consulting before appointment and not the other way around.Top of Form

The Prime Minister defended Thomas’ integrity saying he is best suited for the position.
