The government of Barbuda is inching closer to achieving its goal of promoting environmental sustainability on the island through a groundbreaking initiative.
The latest reports reveal that a powerful Hybrid Electricity Plant is soon to be delivered to the government, and the handover ceremony is expected to take place next month.
This ambitious project entails the construction of a brand-new electricity power station, along with a 720 kWp solar photovoltaic facility and an 863 kilowatt-hour (kWh) battery storage solution. The battery storage system is specially designed to capture and regulate the electricity generated by the solar plant, thereby ensuring a stable and reliable power supply.
This cutting-edge initiative is projected to increase the renewable energy capacity of the island, enabling it to meet 100% of the daytime power needs. The project will be overseen by the Information Minister Melford Nicholas, who will lead a delegation to Barbuda for the official handover ceremony.
“This thing has come about as a result of our friends in the UAE who are so gracious for the support for what we are doing with the changes are necessary after Hurricane struck Barbuda,” Nicholas said.
When commissioned, the plant will ensure resilience and a stable electricity supply at night and other periods when solar power may not be available.
“One of the areas we had to do was to bury the hypertension wires which are usually aerial a good portion of it was buried below the surface of the ground,” Nicholas said.
