The new Republic Bank Caribbean Premier League (CPL) franchise has stirred up some debate among locals regarding its name, with suggestions like “Antigua and Barbuda Man-O-War” or “Antigua and Barbuda Frigate Bird” being favored over the chosen name, “Antigua & Barbuda Falcons.”

Residents have expressed dissatisfaction, feeling that the selected name lacks relevance to Antigua.

One individual on social media commented, “Do they know that the Atlanta Football team already has that Name. They could not come up with an original name.”

Another expressed similar sentiments, stating, “Antigua or the Caribbean for that matter, is not known for falcons, period. I find it very difficult to believe that out of almost 100 entries (suggested count by someone earlier) that this was the selection. No ill will to the winner. Just seems like the winning name would have been something closer to home.”

In addition to the popular suggestions of “Antigua and Barbuda Man-O-War” and “Antigua and Barbuda Frigate Bird”, other names were also proposed.

One suggestion was “Antigua and Barbuda Hunter Wasp,” or “Antigua and Barbuda Pelican.”

The franchise owners, WORLDWIDE Sports Management Group, unveiled the team’s name during a gala opening ceremony, with Parimatch announced as the Title Sponsor.

The name “Antigua & Barbuda Falcons” was the winning entry in a contest held by the franchise, conceptualized by local graphic designer Ishara Samuel.

There has been a claim on social media that the name “Antigua and Barbuda Frigate Bird” was submitted but did not win the bid.

Like seriously, does the name “Antigua and Barbuda Frigate Birds” stir alarm in anyone’s heart? THE NAMES OF MOST TEAMS ARE USUALLY ANIMALS OF PREY! They usually suggest DOMINANCE! People need to leave this stuff to the professionals!🙄
