In conclusion to his trial yesterday, murder accused Kelly Friday delivered a statement, expressing extreme remorse and offering apologies to his family, for the tragic outcome that led to the death of his uncle, Selwyn Mannix.
The incident, which occurred on September 11, 2021, at Point Wharf, has been at the center of a trial where Friday maintained his innocence, claiming self-defense.
In his statement, Friday recounted the events leading to the altercation, stating that his uncle had become aggressive over a small sum of money, wielding a wattle stick with intent to harm.
Despite attempts to avoid confrontation, Friday explained that his uncle persistently attacked him, leaving him with no choice but to defend himself.
During his emotional statement, Friday expressed his desire to change the past, acknowledging the pain and hardship his actions had caused his family.
He described his uncle as someone who had often helped him in times of need, making the situation even more tragic.
The trial, which had seen defense attorneys Wendel Alexander and Wayne Marsh arguing for Friday’s innocence based on self-defense.
Both the prosecution and defense are now set to make their closing arguments today.
