The Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party will conduct two polls in the All-Saints West constituency soon to determine the winner of the primary, which was held on March 16th
Lamin Newton emerged as the candidate with the most votes, with 157. He was followed by Registe Burton, who garnered 142 votes, and Ary Simon, who received 60.
However, soon after the election results were announced, Registe Burton raised concerns about the voting process.
In a letter addressed to the Antigua and Barbuda Labor Party (ABLP) chairman E.P Chet Greene and Leader Prime Minister Gaston Browne, Burton pointed out various irregularities in the voting process.
One of Burton’s key issues was the party rule that mandates a candidate secure an outright majority of fifty percent plus one margin to be declared the winner. Neither Burton nor Newton achieved this, which led Burton to request a run-off.
Following Burton’s letter, the ABLP held a central executive meeting on Friday to investigate the matter.
After a thorough discussion, the party decided to hold a poll to determine the real winner of the All Saints constituency.
The winner of this poll will become the caretaker for All Saints and subsequently become the candidate in the next general elections.
