Antigua and Barbuda’s Ambassador to the Organisation of America States (OAS) recently welcomed comments from representatives of both Guatemala and Belize at the OAS regarding the ongoing border row between the two countries.

Sir Ronald Sanders comments came after both countries agreed at a recent meeting to work together to amicably resold the long-standing dispute.

“The words we heard this morning are words of encouragement, we heard for instance both sides talking about harmony and a harmonious approach. We heard the representatives of Guatemala saying what has been happening in the adjacent zone has led to a better understanding on both sides. We have heard the representative from Belize say the people who live in that area to all intense and purposes have been living peacefully,” he said.

He further explained that Belize has had the issue hanging over it for the entire period since the political independence and the sooner it can be resolved the better.

Sir Ronald also indicated that the process being used by both countries to resolve the matter through peaceful means is an example to other countries all over the world.

Guatemala is currently thought to claim more than half of Belize’s territory, though Guatemala’s foreign affairs minister, Mr. Martinez Alvarado, said the precise details of the claim are secret.
