A high surf warning has been issued for Barbuda, Anguilla, and the British Virgin Islands, effective immediately and continuing through tonight.
Meanwhile an advisory is in effect for Antigua.
The warning specifically applies to reefs and primarily exposed northern and north-facing coastlines, including relatively shallow, gently to moderately sloping nearshore areas.
The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Services reports the arrival of moderate long-period swells, creating highly hazardous conditions along the mentioned coastlines.
There is a high threat level to life, livelihood, property, and infrastructure for individuals using these coastlines, with the potential for extensive impacts.
These swells are expected to produce life-threatening surf and rip currents.
A high surf warning indicates the presence of dangerous battering surf exceeding 3 meters or 10 feet along certain coastlines, leading to extremely hazardous conditions.
Significant wave heights could range from 2.1 to 3.0 meters (7 to 10 feet), occasionally exceeding 3.5 meters (13 feet), with a swell period of 10 to 14 seconds.
Swells from the north-northwest are expected to be between 1.8 to 2.7 meters (6 to 9 feet) and occasionally higher.
Breaking swells, or surfs, could reach over 3 meters (10 feet), creating conditions highly conducive to dangerous rip currents.
Residents are advised by 268 Weather to remain calm and not swim against the current. Instead, swim parallel to the shoreline until it’s possible to swim at an angle toward the beach or signal for assistance.
