Sam Bankman-Fried

Sam Bankman-Fried, also known as SBF, has received a 25-year prison sentence for embezzling billions of dollars from clients of his cryptocurrency exchange, FTX.

During a two-hour hearing, Judge Lewis Kaplan stated that Bankman-Fried was aware that his actions were illegal and that he regretted making a poor decision regarding the likelihood of being caught.

Bankman-Fried acknowledged that he had made many errors, but he maintained that FTX had the ability to reimburse customers when it collapsed.

According to prosecutors, Bankman-Fried defrauded unsuspecting customers of more than $10 billion (£7.9 billion) in “one of the biggest financial frauds” in US history.

Before it went bankrupt in 2022, FTX was valued at $32 billion, and SBF built a public persona that drew in celebrities, politicians, and business moguls.

During a court hearing, Judge Kaplan read out a sentence to SBF and asked if he would like to be informed about the conditions.

SBF, who is 32 years old, declined the offer by simply saying “no thanks”. The prison term that was handed down to SBF falls short of the sentence that the prosecutors had requested.

The prosecutors had pushed for a longer sentence, up to 50 years. However, the prison term is not what SBF’s legal team was hoping for either.

They had proposed a much shorter sentence, ranging from five to 6.5 years.
