The United Nations High-Level Panel, co-chaired by the Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne, has recently presented its final report on a Multi-dimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI).
This report is a significant milestone for Antigua and Barbuda and other developing states worldwide vulnerable to various challenges.
The MVI report proposes a more comprehensive approach to assessing a country’s well-being and development, going beyond the traditional Gross National Income (GNI) per capita metric.
The report results from the joint efforts of Prime Minister Browne and Norway’s former Prime Minister, Erna Solberg, who co-chaired the high-level UN panel.
During a United Nations virtual meeting on Thursday, Browne addressed the significance of this final report, emphasizing its potential to transform how we understand and approach development challenges in vulnerable countries.
The MVI report is a significant step forward in the global community’s efforts to support vulnerable states and promote more inclusive and sustainable development.
Browne said there is currently no widely accepted benchmark to measure structural vulnerability or lack of resilience across multiple dimensions of sustainable developments at a national level, hence the MVI fills these gaps
