Gladys Potter, the United Progressive Party’s caretaker for St John’s Rural South constituency, has called on MP Daryll Matthew to make sure residents of the Golden Grove area have access to a community center.
This follows the demolition of an incomplete structure that had been planned to serve as a community center for the area since 2009.
The Development Control Agency (DCA) recently destroyed the building, citing foundational instability.
Potter believes the MP should reassure residents that they will get a promised community center. Potter said that a structural engineer’s report showed that the building was sound.
The demolished building was so strong that they could not destroy the foundation, which now sits in a field. Potter believes that providing a community center would be a positive development for the area and its young people.
MP Matthew said the intention was to create an outdoor gym and police outpost at the site.
He said the DCA had deemed the building structurally unsound. A retrofitted container will be used instead, painted and fitted with all the amenities needed for police operations.
Potter thinks it’s a great move but still believes that a community center is essential. Matthew claimed that building and maintaining a community center is costly.
He suggested that a space where residents can hold community meetings and classes would be more appropriate. He referenced the new wing of the Golden Grove Primary School, which is used for after-school classes.
