On Thursday, the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard successfully rescued all five individuals onboard the cargo vessel AMAYA.
The vessel, which was carrying cement and stone, had encountered distress after it began taking on water at around 4 am.
According to reports, the incident occurred after the vessel had been grounded on a sandbank since 10:30 pm the previous evening, waiting for high tide to depart. Unfortunately, rough water conditions caused the vessel to start sinking, prompting the crew to seek assistance.
Upon receiving the distress call, the Coast Guard promptly responded and arrived to find the vessel in a critical situation.
The crew members were in dire need of help, and the Coast Guard immediately initiated a rescue operation.
After the operation was successfully completed at 6:30 am, all five crew members were safely extracted and taken to Headquarters Coast Guard for medical evaluation and treatment.
The incident took place approximately 5.2 nautical miles off Leonora on the West Coast of Demerara.
The timely response and professionalism of the Guyana Defence Force Coast Guard played a vital role in the successful rescue of the crew members, who were lucky to have survived such a perilous situation.
