Antigua and Barbuda strengthens ties with Malta on climate and maritime security

On the 22nd of April 2024, E.P Chet Greene, the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Trade, and Barbuda Affairs of Antigua and Barbuda, had the pleasure of visiting Malta.

He was warmly welcomed by Dr Ian Borg, the Minister for Foreign and European Affairs and Trade of the Republic of Malta.

Despite being geographically distant, both countries share a similar background as Small Island States and Commonwealth members.

During their meeting, they discussed various shared environmental challenges and the need for global cooperation on climate issues.

The two ministers agreed on advocating for Small Island States’ interests at international forums, including the upcoming 4th International Conference on Small Island Developing States in St. John’s.

They also discussed Malta’s participation in COP 29 in Baku, Azerbaijan, as a means of enhancing their collaboration and cooperation on environmental issues.

Additionally, they celebrated the growing bilateral cooperation between the two countries, specifically in water management during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Finally, the two countries signed the founding document of the Global Maritime Sanctions Information Centre, which aims to enhance maritime security globally.

This agreement is a significant step towards ensuring the safety and security of maritime transportation globally.

Overall, the meeting was an essential opportunity for both countries to strengthen their relationship and work together towards common goals.
