PAHO Supports Cold Chain Assessment in Antigua and Barbuda

​The Ministry of Health in Antigua and Barbuda has expressed its gratitude to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO) for conducting a comprehensive assessment of the vaccine cold chain system and operations in the country.

The assessment, which took place from April 15-19, was led by PAHO Consultant Adama Eric Sawadogo and aimed to evaluate the vaccine storage and distribution systems in Antigua and Barbuda to ensure the integrity of vaccine potency.

The assessment was conducted in 9 health facilities and institutions, including the main healthcare center of Barbuda, covering 6 districts.

The assessment was a significant milestone for Antigua and Barbuda as it highlighted the country’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens.

Health Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph expressed immense gratitude to PAHO for their invaluable support in this endeavor.

The findings of the assessment were deliberated on in a debriefing session held on April 19, 2024, where ministry officials including Health Minister Sir Molwyn discussed potential strategies for further strengthening the cold chain infrastructure.

The Ministry of Health is committed to fostering ongoing capacity-building initiatives for healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, and pharmacists, who play pivotal roles in the supply chain and distribution of vaccines across the country.

Dr. Gemma Chery, PAHO Country Specialist for Antigua and Barbuda, emphasized the importance of continuous improvement and pledged PAHO’s continued support to Antigua and Barbuda in strengthening its healthcare systems and achieving optimal health outcomes.

The Ministry of Health plans to leverage the insights gained from the assessment to implement targeted interventions that will further bolster Antigua and Barbuda’s healthcare infrastructure and contribute to the overall enhancement of public health outcomes.

Prior to the assessment, PAHO had hosted a regional training workshop on cold chain, supply chain operations, and vaccine management in Grenada for member states.

Antigua and Barbuda was represented by Nurse Wanda Samuel, Deputy Superintendent of Public Health Nursing, and Mrs. Sandra Jonas-Margetson, Inventory Manager of the Medical Benefits Scheme.
