Antigua and Barbuda’s Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, has recently expressed his concerns over the United Progressive Party (UPP), which he describes as the “most serious threat” to the country.
The Prime Minister’s comments came in response to a Newsweek article in which he felt that some UPP members had played a role in providing information that attempted to undermine the relationship between Antigua and Barbuda and the People’s Republic of China.
During his appearance on the Browne and Browne Show on Saturday, PM Browne emphasized the close ties between Antigua and Barbuda and the United States, highlighting the importance of US investments and the country’s reliance on tourism from the US.
However, he noted that at present, the People’s Republic of China is the country’s most important developmental partner.
The Prime Minister expressed his alarm at the idea that UPP officials would want to jeopardize this relationship, particularly given that the UPP sought and obtained developmental assistance from China when in government.
PM Browne accused certain elements within the UPP of wanting to take over the reins of governance “at any cost,” even if it meant figuratively “burning the place down” to emerge from the ashes.
He expressed his concern that individuals within the UPP seeking to take over the governance of the country could show such a level of disloyalty to the state.
The Prime Minister stated that these people don’t care about the impact of their statements on the living standards of the country’s people.
PM Browne accused the opposition of spreading lies and misinformation about the country’s situation, particularly to those in the diaspora.
Finally, the Prime Minister called on the people of Antigua and Barbuda to be aware of the threat posed by the UPP. He warned that the level of irresponsible politics coming from the opposition was the most significant threat facing the country at this time.
PM Browne declared that there was no other potential threat that was more dangerous than the UPP taking office in this country. According to him, the threat from the UPP would be worse than a Category 5 hurricane making a direct hit to Antigua and Barbuda.
The only way to mitigate the damage that a UPP administration would do, he added, is to keep them out of office.
The United Progressive Party (UPP) has also made similar accusations against the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party (ABLP), labeling it as the worst government to ever rule the country.
According to the UPP, the residents of Antigua and Barbuda have suffered greatly under the leadership of the ABLP, particularly in areas such as water, taxes, and unfulfilled promises.
The UPP has strongly urged the electorate to vote against the incumbent government in the upcoming elections, citing the need for a change in leadership and the implementation of policies that prioritize the well-being of the citizens.
These accusations and calls for action have sparked an intense political debate in the country, with both parties defending their records
What, the PM forgot when he was in position, he used to and still have all sorts of faults about the UPP government? PM takes you licks and bow out.
