Leader of the United Progressive Party Jamal Pringle says the UPP and the Antigua and Barbuda Workers Union are in the discussion stage regarding the Severance Protection Fund Bill.
He made the announcement during the annual Labour Day rally on Monday
According to Pringle, his party is committed to supporting the union and the workers, and they are looking to bring a bill to the Parliament that will protect workers’ severance.
The discussions over the severance protection bill have been ongoing since last year’s Labour Day, when Pringle first announced the plan as the interim Political Leader.
Pringle emphasized that workers play a crucial role in the development of Antigua and Barbuda and that the party is dedicated to improving their working conditions.
He also mentioned that the COVID-19 pandemic has taught them the importance of being prepared for all eventualities. Thus, the UPP is prepared to support the efforts of the workers union to ensure that workers’ rights are protected.
It is still unclear whether the Bill will be brought before the Parliament as a Private Member’s Bill or as a government-sponsored bill. Furthermore, the exact wording of the proposed Bill has not been disclosed yet.
However, Pringle’s announcement indicates that the UPP and the ABWU are working collaboratively to bring about much-needed improvements in the working conditions of Antigua and Barbuda’s workforce.
