Today, the Central Board of Health joined the other Caribbean Islands in celebrating Mosquito Awareness Week, which runs from May 13 to 17, under the theme: “Small bite, big threat” and “Stop disease transmission, start source reduction.

The Central Board of Health (CBH) has introduced a new feature to raise awareness of mosquito control measures this year.

In the past, CBH officers visited schools and lectured students, but this year, they invited students to visit its headquarters on Upper Church Street instead.

The CBH Vector Control Unit has set up a weeklong display on the grounds of its headquarters, called “Mosquito Village,” to educate students and the public on the various measures to keep mosquitoes under control.

The display showcases corrective measures to reduce or control mosquito breeding and potential mosquito breeding sites.

The practical sessions have been specially designed with students in mind. During this week, different time slots have been allocated for students from various schools to visit the “Mosquito Village” and receive demonstrations on the entire process of how mosquitoes are spread, the diseases they cause, and how to control or eliminate their presence in and around the home.

The Principal Public Health Inspector, Julienne Mannix, told Antigua.news that today’s event was well received.

The Sunny Side Primary was the first class to visit the venue while two other schools participated

On Tuesday a number of students are expected to visit

“For the entire week, we will have students visiting the yard that we created and children and teachers will have practical sessions to learn about different mosquito habitat and how to eliminate them,”, she said
