Cancer Center Eastern Caribbean

By Aabigayle McIntosh

If all goes well, in a matter of weeks the Cancer Center Eastern Caribbean could resume operations providing critical care for patients who require the services.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne told local media this week that talks with Prominent Surgeon Dr Joseph “Joey” John and the group of United States-based investors are wrapping up.

They have also transferred the first set of sums into escrow.

“I am told they have sent the sales proceeds to a local Attorney; the proceeds are in Escrow. And, they are now completing the documentation. I am hoping if not this week, by next week the sale will be completed,” the Prime Minister said.

While talks are concluding on the government side, the Prime Minister that the group will also have to hold separate meetings with the former private owners on the sale of the equipment in the facility.

“Assuming there is no issue, they will be able to acquire the equipment then they will be able to open in a matter of weeks if that becomes protracted then perhaps it will stay a little longer,” he said.

The Cancer Center closed last April forcing local patients to seek life-saving radiotherapy treatment overseas, incurring significant expenses.
