A Nightmare at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center: Unprofessionalism at Its Worst

6 June 2024 - 11:46

To the Editor,

I am writing to bring to light the appalling treatment and unprofessional service I experienced at the Sir Lester Bird Medical Center.

On the evening of [specific date], I arrived at the hospital seeking urgent medical attention.  However, what I encountered was nothing short of a nightmare.

When I arrived at 9 PM, there was no staff member present at the receptionist desk.

Desperately needing assistance, I stepped further into the facility, only to find a worker fast asleep at her post.

Despite the emergency room being packed with patients in need, there was only one doctor available to provide care.

As a result, I was forced to endure a wait from 9 PM until 5 AM before I could be seen.

This level of neglect and lack of professionalism is unacceptable.

The health and well-being of patients should be the top priority at any medical center, yet my experience at Sir Lester Bird Medical Center was far from that standard.

I urge the Ministry of Health to address these issues immediately to prevent others from suffering similar mistreatment.

  1. For the person decrying the conditions at MSJMC, I ask Where are the supporting photos to support your obviously partisan attack on the hospital? Surely it was an ideal moment to capture via photo all the incriminating evidence required since, according to the liar, there was hardly any persons of authority around!!! And why risk your health in this manner, opting to remain for hours in such pain and agony when do you IN FACT have options to seek the URGENT CARE that you seemed to need. Thank God that He kept you alive, if indeed you were sick in the first place! And all you can do is lambast the Hospital????? Dear Lord, have mercy!

    • Nope. Both of you need to take a seat. You all are probably ALP supporters for you all the system is always Running perfectly and everyone complains for no reason, there is too much corruption for a small country. We deserve better damn it! Question how much you got last election to vote. our health care system is not up to standard I repeat it is not up to standard. Why no minister in Antigua ever goes there. They have insurance to fly out. People have died in the waiting area our hospital is not enough for our growing population. Maybe if we put you 2 together we can get a working braincell. But listen any of you I dear you to do a questionnaire on the service at that hospital and look at the reviews. Does the hospital even have a review system to self reflect even in it’s customers service department. A lot of things happen there that’s not suppose to. And the photos that they took probably could not be posted for legal reason this news company probably is covering itself legally. But back to the point I hope you never need medical attention here American nurse nor the other that seem to live under a rock. Talk to an Antiguan and there experience here not from behind your keyboard. These experiences are real. I’ve worked there, seen some things I can’t discuss here. So keep living in your bubble and professing our hospital is capable. The reality for the poor Antiguans will not change. OUR HOSPITAL IS NOT UP TO STANDARDS.

    • Pics were more than likely w/held by the newspaper who would have left themselves open to a really nice lawsuit, had they been posted.

    • No pictures are needed for facts everyone that attends to hospital have to wait for long hours to be attended to its not yesterday the problem started its been years but until youre family ends up at the hospital only until then i guess u will speak on the truth

  2. The hospital is underfunded, understaffed, and existing staff is overworked, so the issues you encountered are understandable.

I keep encountering persons who want to use the ER as their doctor’s office. It is NOT. It is an EMERGENCY ROOM, where EMERGENCY cases are seen. Therefore if you go with an non-emergent case, be prepared to wait.

Also, as you petition your Health Minister, please petition for community clinics that truly function as a clinic should, and not as afterthought care center, where some Dr’s only pop up when the feel like, and for whatever time they feel like.

Everyone keeps knocking MSJMC. While it can do better in some areas, trust me, it offers a pretty good product for a quote “third-world country”, and better than some of the hospitals here in these United States👌🏾💪🏾
