Director of the Department of the Environment, Ambassador Diane Black-Layne

The Department of Environment, led by Environment Minister Sir Molwyn Joseph and Director Diann Black-Layne, is expressing its strong commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and addressing the urgent challenges of climate change.

World Environment Day, observed on June 5, serves as a reminder of this commitment.

This year’s focus on “Land Restoration, Desertification, and Drought Resilience” underscores the critical need for collective action to protect and revive our planet’s lands.

Minister Joseph emphasized the significance of this global observance, highlighting the responsibility to preserve the natural world.

In Antigua and Barbuda, the government is dedicated to implementing robust policies and initiatives to promote sustainable development and environmental resilience.

It’s crucial for all sectors – government, businesses, communities, and individuals – to work together to combat desertification, restore degraded lands, and strengthen drought resilience, ultimately creating a greener and healthier future for future generations.

Director Black-Layne stressed the indispensable role of community involvement and innovative solutions in achieving environmental sustainability.

In supporting World Environment Day’s goals, the Department of Environment is highlighting its Green Energy Programs, promoting the use of solar and renewable energy sources to reduce carbon emissions and enhance energy resilience across the nation.

The department is also engaging in community education and outreach programs to raise awareness about land restoration, desertification, and drought resilience. Biodiversity conservation measures are being implemented to protect and restore critical habitats and ecosystems, ensuring the preservation of the nation’s rich biodiversity.

Additionally, the department advocates for sustainable development policies that support responsible land use, waste management, and water conservation.

Furthermore, the Department of Environment is encouraging participation in local activities aimed at restoring the land and building resilience to drought.

Small actions, such as planting trees, reducing water usage, implementing sustainable farming practices, and supporting eco-friendly initiatives, can collectively make a significant impact, underscoring the message of World Environment Day.
