The Directorate of Gender Affairs (DoGA) has worked diligently to compile and submit the country’s 2024 report on progress in achieving gender equality, in line with the Beijing Declaration & Platform for Action (BPfA).
This comprehensive report is the result of extensive consultation and validation exercises carried out over several months.
The process began in February, with a thorough review of past BPfA reports and national documents, including reports to the Committee on the Convention for the Elimination of All Forms of Violence Against Women and Girls (CEDAW) and the Voluntary National Review on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
Key stakeholders from government, private sector, and civil society were consulted to assess the strides made by the nation towards gender equality over the past five years. This inclusive process allowed various agencies to report on their policies, programs, and activities addressing the challenges faced by women and girls.
A draft report, overseen by the BPfA Working Group, was compiled with input from representatives of different departments and organizations.
In May, a mass validation exercise, hosted by DoGA, saw stakeholders review and provide input for the final version of the report, which was then submitted to ministry officials for approval.
Executive Director Jamie Saunders expressed satisfaction with the thorough process and resulting report, emphasizing the goal of gaining an accurate understanding of Antigua & Barbuda’s progress through a transparent and consultative approach. The report serves as a baseline for future efforts in advancing gender equality.
The Directorate expressed gratitude to all contributing agencies and stressed the importance of ongoing support in furthering the cause of gender equality in Antigua & Barbuda.
