Ambassador Colin Murdoch, representing the OECS Mission in Geneva, Switzerland, expressed condolences by signing a Book of Condolences at the Malawi mission in Geneva following the tragic passing of Malawi’s Vice President, Dr. Saulos Chilima.

Dr. Chilima, along with eight others, lost their lives in a Malawi military plane crash. The incident occurred last Wednesday while Dr. Chilima was en route to Mzuzu to attend the burial of the late Ralph Kasambara in Nkhata Bay.

The Malawi Defence Force (MDF) plane, carrying the Vice President, lost contact approximately 10 minutes before its scheduled landing at Mzuzu Airport. The wreckage of the aircraft was discovered later.

Vice President Chilima was laid to rest in his village south of the capital, following a state funeral in Lilongwe that called for an independent investigation into the tragic plane crash that claimed his life and the lives of nine others.

The funeral, attended by President Lazarus Chakwera and other dignitaries, took place at the Bingu Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe, where heartfelt final tributes were paid to the late vice president.

The president’s call for an independent probe reflects the importance of understanding the circumstances surrounding this devastating incident.
