The rapid growth in the tourism and real estate sectors in Antigua and Barbuda has sparked a surge in demand for skilled construction workers.

Prime Minister, Gaston Browne, highlighted the increasing need for construction expertise, driven by the upcoming major hotel projects and the construction of high-end private properties in the region.

Prime Minister Browne emphasized that the country has attracted a significant number of luxury properties, surpassing other Caribbean nations.

These developments include projects within the PLH Project, as well as constructions in exclusive areas like Jumby Bay, Windward Beach, Galley Bay Heights, Pearns Point, and the prestigious Mill Reef Club. The prime minister noted that many of these properties are valued between US$5 million and US$50 million each.

Highlighting the unique nature of these developments, Browne pointed out that luxury homes are often spread across extensive land areas, unlike traditional single-building hotel properties.

For instance, at the Windward Beach development, approximately fifteen properties have been built, each valued at no less than US$10 million.

The prime minister stressed that these developments have had a significant impact on the local economy.

Although their contributions are factored into the country’s GDP, their most visible impact has been the increased demand for skilled construction workers. These workers play a crucial role in translating the construction boom into tangible socio-economic progress for the country.

PM Browne recounted a meeting with a contractor who expressed an immediate need to double his 150-person workforce to accommodate the upcoming projects, including luxury properties and hotels.

Notably, these include the Nikki Beach Hotel Development, to be spearheaded by Ambassador Calvin Ayre, the high-end Marriot Resort at Yeptons, and the potential One-and-Only resort development at Half Moon Bay.

The contractor’s urgent workforce expansion aims to meet the escalating demands for skilled labor in Antigua and Barbuda.

In response to the contractor’s request, the government is actively considering recruiting skilled workers from outside the Caribbean to fill the growing labor gap. This strategic move aims to ensure that the burgeoning construction sector can effectively support the country’s development and economic growth.
