Aquatic Centre project faces design dilemma

The development of Antigua’s highly anticipated national aquatic centre has hit a snag, as discussions between the government and the national swimming federation over design specifics have led to delays in the project’s progression.

Sports Minister Daryll Matthew recently shed light on the situation, revealing that the swimming association has expressed a desire to bring in a specialized design team, potentially replacing the existing architectural plans.

This request comes more than 18 months after the pool.

” I work along with the association, and they have indicated that they want a particular architect and design company to do the drawings as opposed to the ones we already have and so that’s where we are,” Minister Matthew explained.

The minister emphasized his eagerness to move the project forward but acknowledged the importance of collaboration with the association. However, concerns have arisen about the financial implications of engaging a new design team.

The swimming association’s preference for specialized pool designers stems from reported communication challenges with the current architects.

They argue that a dedicated team could better address the unique requirements of an international-standard aquatic facility.

The original concept included a 25-meter 10-lane competition pool, warm-up pool, gym, and spectator facilities for 600 people.
