The Antigua and Barbuda Meteorological Service issued a moderate air quality alert for the country on Tuesday which is expected to last until Friday. This marks the twelfth surge of Saharan Dust affecting the islands in 2024.
The air quality index currently ranges from 70 to 101, placing it in the “moderate” category. This decrease in air quality is primarily due to an increase in particulate matter (PM 2.5 and PM 10) associated with the Saharan Dust event.
Health officials have raised the alert level to II, indicating an elevated threat of health problems, particularly for sensitive groups. People with respiratory or heart conditions, the elderly, and children are considered most at risk during this period.
While the air quality is generally acceptable for most of the population, there may be moderate health concerns for a small number of individuals who are unusually sensitive to air pollution.
As a precautionary measure, active children and adults, as well as individuals with respiratory diseases such as asthma, are advised to limit prolonged outdoor activities.
The public is encouraged to stay informed about any changes in air quality and to take necessary precautions to protect their health.
Residents and visitors are advised to monitor local weather reports and follow any additional guidance provided by health authorities.
The situation will continue to be closely monitored, with updates provided as necessary
