The Cabinet has unanimously decided to initiate the process of passing legislation aimed at expunging the criminal records of individuals who have been convicted for possessing small amounts of cannabis.
This decision was reached after careful consideration and reflects the government’s commitment to addressing the issue of non-violent drug offenses.
The proposed legislation will be presented to the Parliament for enactment. It is seen as the most effective mechanism for achieving the intended goal of providing relief to those affected by such convictions.
The Parliament is scheduled to convene in July 2024, following the completion of the formation of the Government benches.
This timeline has been strategically chosen to ensure that the legislative process can be initiated and completed in a timely manner.
