The Cabinet extended invitations to both the Fire Chief and his Deputy to attend its meeting in order to discuss the increasing needs of the state, particularly in providing additional firetrucks for the Fire Department.

With the construction of more housing, shopping malls, and office buildings across the country, there is a growing demand for the Fire Service.

The further buildings are located from the Fire Department in villages, the greater the number of trucks required in order to reduce response time.

During the meeting, firefighters highlighted that larger firetrucks with higher water-bearing capacity move more slowly and are more difficult for drivers to maneuver on Antigua’s narrow streets.

As a result, the firefighters recommended increasing the number of water tank trucks with a carrying capacity of 2,500 gallons, to be stationed at Fire Departments, as well as firetrucks with a capacity of up to 1,000 gallons of water.

After considering the recommendations, the Cabinet agreed to acquire five additional firetrucks, with one designated for St. John’s, Cobbs Cross, All Saints, Johnson’s Point, and one for the Airport. Additionally, the Fire Department will purchase two tankers.

The Cabinet also addressed the need for more fill-up points for the trucks and tankers to ensure that the vehicles are always prepared for emergency response.
