Two murder convicts seek early release

Judge alone

The High Court last week reviewed the cases of Isaiah Benjamin and Kayvin Jerome Benjamin, two convicted murderers seeking early release after serving approximately 14 years of their 25-year sentences.

The Benjamins were convicted in 2010 for the murder of Lyndon Isaac, an innocent bystander killed during an armed robbery at T’s Natural Bamboo Bar. Along with accomplice Edwin Gomez, who is serving a 30-year sentence, the masked trio committed the robbery before fleeing in a vehicle driven by Isaiah.

At the time of sentencing, the judge indicated that the Benjamins’ cases should be reviewed this year, while Gomez’s sentence cannot be reviewed before 23 years have elapsed.

On Friday, Senior Prison Officer Lyndon Russell testified about the convicts’ behaviour and rehabilitation efforts.

Russell informed the court that both men have been involved in the prison’s kitchen operations.

However, Justice Ann Marie Smith found the information presented insufficient for making a decision.

She adjourned the hearing until July 23, to allow for the gathering of more comprehensive evidence regarding the convicts’ rehabilitation and readiness for potential early release.
