HISTORIC: Dominica Appoints First-Ever Female Kalinago Chief

23 July 2024 - 15:00

Anette Sanford

In a historic moment in Dominica’s history, Anette Sanford was appointed as the first-ever Kalinago Chief. She achieved a landslide victory with 692 votes, surpassing her closest rival Natasha Green, who received 272 votes.

As the first woman to be elected Kalinago Chief, Sanford emphasized the importance of unity and community development in her victory speech.

Her journey to this historic win included previous political involvement and a role as a Senator for the UWP.

This year, she received 286 more votes than in the 2019 election, surprising many with her landslide victory.

The outcome of the election was unexpected to some, as many had anticipated a close race between Sanford and entrepreneur Natasha Green.

However, Sanford’s lead became apparent on Monday night, securing her position as the first-ever Kalinago Chief.
