Job programme worker charged with defrauding government, gets bail

Yvonne Cornwall of Potters has been charged with stealing over $100,000 in government funds in an alleged scam.

Cornwall, who worked in the Government’s Work Experience Programme, is accused of diverting statutory contributions from job program participants into her personal account even after they had left the program.

The scheme was reportedly uncovered when a former employer noticed discrepancies in statutory payments.

Cornwall was arrested and charged over the weekend with larceny, obtaining money by false pretenses, and money laundering.

The Office of National Drug Control and Money Laundering Policy (ONDCP) took the lead in investigating an alleged fraud case.

Today, she appeared before the St. John’s Magistrates Court and was released on bail set at $150,000, which included a $10,000 cash component along with other stipulations.
