A team of youth ambassadors are cautioning residents about the dangers of sugar-sweetened beverages (SSBs).

The National Youth Ambassador Corp is an initiative managed by the Department of Youth Affairs to promote development and opportunities for young people in Antigua and Barbuda.

Antigua News recently spoke to youth ambassador Chrysean Jarvis to get further details on the discussions that have been taking place on local media platforms.

Jarvis says his perspective on the sugar-free initiative is informed by his academic background in food nutrition and health.

“I firmly believe that the health of our nation is its greatest wealth, directly influencing our economic growth.”

He warns that SSBs should be consumed with caution, as they are a major contributor to mortality and an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases.

He adds, however, that the issue extends beyond just sugar and foods high in salt and fats are also harmful.

“It’s crucial to pay attention not only to the ingredients in our food but also to the preparation methods. Proper food preparation is essential to preserve the nutrients that nourish our bodies and support overall health.”

Jarvis credits the power of teamwork from fellow youth ambassadors Esquires Henry, Kerron McKenzie, and Shaquan O’Neil in executing this sugar-free initiative.

Additionally, he expresses thanks for the support of other youth leaders and the broader National Youth Parliament Association of Antigua and Barbuda, in which he also functions as a Youth MP for St. John’s Rural South.

Jarvis is leading the charge for the upcoming Rural South Back-to-School Health Expo, an event specifically designed for youths preparing to return to school in September.

Residents can look forward to a range of services, including free registration, blood glucose testing, blood cholesterol testing, blood pressure measurements, and body mass index calculations.

Attendees will also benefit from health talks by professionals, physical activity sessions, and light, healthy refreshments.

The expo set to take place on Sunday, August 25th, from 2:00 pm to 6:00 pm provides a valuable opportunity for individuals to discuss their health concerns with experienced medical doctors and receive comprehensive advice and support.

Jarvis thanks his sponsors and community partners for being able to organize this event.

“I am also grateful for the assistance of Dr. Monica Osborn Stevens, owner of MOS Medical, who is providing medical resources, education, and personnel for this initiative. We have received support from various corporate stakeholders, including the Medical Benefits Scheme, CostPro, Anjo Wholesale, and Island Provision.”

“Additionally, the community’s generosity, exemplified by Ms. Philip’s donation highlights our collective commitment to a healthier Antigua and Barbuda.”
