Man accused of robbing Chinese supermarket remanded

Hewette Weathered

By Zaya Williams

A 24-year-old man has been remanded to His Majesty’s Prison following his court appearance on Monday in connection with the robbery of a Chinese supermarket.

Hewette Weathered is accused of robbing the Guang Yuan Supermarket in Radio Range on August 19. According to authorities, Weathered allegedly stole a cash pan and $700 in cash from the supermarket owners.

The suspect’s arrest came five days after the incident, on August 24, during a police stop-and-search operation near Perry Bay Supermarket.

Given the serious nature of the alleged offense, Weathered’s case is classified as indictable, meaning it must proceed through committal proceedings before potentially moving to a higher court.

During his appearance at the St. John’s Magistrates’ Court on Monday, Weathered was ordered to remain in custody at His Majesty’s Prison.

He is scheduled to return to court on October 17 for his committal hearing, where it will be determined if there is sufficient evidence to send the case to trial.
